Starting from remote control parking systems up to driverless technology, the artificial intelligence (AI) is drastically altering the way we perceive the vehicles. While self-driving concept cars are in the spotlight, this is only one of many ways AI is revolutionizing the automotive industry. In this post, we will have a closer look at how biggest OEMs are implementing AI innovations to bring the cars of tomorrow to our today’s streets.

BMW and Mobileye

The Mobileye solution, which incorporates the Mobileye EyeQ® system-on-chip, related algorithms, and software supports a comprehensive suite of ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) functions using a single camera mounted on the windshield of the car.

Camera-based ADAS systems are already making the roads safer. The data of future BMW vehicles will enrich the quality of maps and road services for everyone.

The technology is based upon mastering 3 technological pillars:

  • Sensing. Using a single camera on the windshield instead of biological eyes, the system is able to interpret the information in the same way humans do.
  • Mapping. For path sensing and foresight purposes, a highly accurate map serves as the source of redundancy.
  • Driving policy. The observance of traffic rules is a key point. Mobileye’s approach to this challenge is to employ what is called reinforcement learning algorithms trained through deep networks. Their learning algorithms allow to negotiate with other human-driven vehicles in complex situations to prevent different threads and plan maneuvers.

Mercedes and Remote Parking Pilot

With Remote Parking Pilot system, Mercedes makes it possible to enter or exit a parking space from outside the vehicle: the system is enabled by smartphone over a Bluetooth connection.

To use this system, the driver's smartphone must be within around three meters of the vehicle. The driver can select one of the parking scenarios – for example, parallel or perpendicular parking spaces, left or right, forward or reverse. The parking scenario is enacted automatically - including steering, braking, and gear direction changes - as long as the driver continues to provide a confirmation gesture on the smartphone.

Systems like the new Remote Parking Pilot are creating the bridge between the current crop of automobiles and the fully autonomous cars we’ll be driven in one or two decades from now.

The Remote Parking Pilot operates in conjunction with:

  • PARKTRONIC's ultrasonic sensors;
  • 360° camera;
  • KEYLESS GO, which monitors the distance between driver and vehicle;
  • Automatic transmission.

Volvo and Co-pilot

The recently-launched Volvo Co-Pilot platform is designed for use on machines as diverse as excavators to pavers. It uses a tablet computer that acts as the interface to Volvo’s machine-specific Assist applications, which deliver real-time intelligence to the operator.

Volvo Co-Pilot is the first step towards an integrated, holistic solution for worksite optimization. Not only does it set a new industry standard but it also puts operators at the heart of the system.

Built upon an Android operating system, the platform provides 4 applications: Load Assist, Dig Assist, Load Assist, Compact Assist, and Pave Assist.

  • Dig Assist allows excavator operators to complete digging tasks to a greater accuracy in less time. Safety is also improved, as there is no need to repeatedly get out of the cab and physically check grades or levels.
  • Load Assist delivers real time accurate load information to the operator. Fully automatic, the system logs all load information and the data is then displayed on the operator’s in-cab Volvo Co-Pilot display.
  • Compact Assist records and displays a pass counter and thermal mapping while calculating 100% of the surface density.
  • Pave Assist automates many of the paving parameters. It combines Thermal Mapping, Weather View, Material Manager and (as a complementary option) Volvo Smartview modules.

Audi and Traffic Jam Pilot

The Audi AI Traffic Jam Pilot is the world’s first system that enables highly automated driving at Level 3. The innovation handles the task of driving in a traffic jam or slow-moving highway traffic up to 60 km/h (37.3 mph). With traffic jam pilot engaged, drivers no longer need to continuously monitor the vehicle and the road. They must merely remain alert and capable of taking over the task of driving when the system prompts them to do so.

The system constantly monitors traffic maps and the vehicle's position through its 4G LTE connection. Its hardware array includes:

  • 12 ultrasonic parking sensors with 3 meters of range to detect immediately nearby objects;
  • Four 360-degree cameras, one on each side;
  • Four radar sensors (70-meter distance);
  • One long-range radar (240 meters) offset in the front fascia;
  • One forward-facing monovision camera mounted ahead of the rearview mirror;
  • One 140-degree lidar sensor in the front bumper that scans 200 meters down the road.

General Motors and OnStar Go

General Motors and IBM combine IBM's artificial intelligence software Watson with the carmaker's OnStar system in order to market services to drivers in their vehicles. The system is better able to automate interactions both with the driver and with businesses and facilities around them.

OnStar Go uses data gathered by the driver to make informed decisions about potential product and service offerings from things in proximity to the car or within the car itself. For instance, it could recognize when the car is low on fuel, identify a nearby pump, pre-activate the pump for use and let the driver pay directly from their dash, or it could allow for pre-order of a coffee for pickup from a drive-in window, or use your listening habits to create a personalized radio station.
