Software development for telematics

Since 2014, we’ve delivered platforms that connect vehicles to the people who drive and manage them. Today, we apply that automotive experience to telematics software developed for OEMs, Tier-1 suppliers, and hardware manufacturers.

Our telematics software development services

Berg Insight reports more than 51.2 million aftermarket telematics devices shipped worldwide in 2024, a €2.4 billion market on course for 77.5 million units a year by 2029. As those volumes rise, demand for supporting software grows too.

For a tracker manufacturer, that might be a customer-facing platform sold with its equipment; for an OEM or operator, it could mean integrating telematics capabilities into an existing programme or workflow.

Our services help each client address the operational challenges of their business:

  • Get telematics software to market faster alongside new hardware launch
  • Bring vehicle data into the TMS, ERP, CRM, and other systems your teams use
  • Scale from a pilot to thousands of connected devices
  • Give fleet managers and drivers solutions they will not abandon.

We design web applications around the signals your hardware exposes and the users who need to monitor and interpret them. A customer portal and a technical monitoring console will have different priorities, so the interface might bring together:

  • Live location maps, trip history, and geofencing events
  • Vehicle diagnostics, fault codes, battery readings, and sensor data
  • Device connectivity, health, and OTA update status
  • AI-powered conversational analytics for querying telematics data in plain language
  • Multi-tenant white-label branding, access permissions, and customer-specific data views.

For some products, a smartphone app is the main point of access to the hardware; for others, selected information also needs to reach an in-car screen. We can develop native or cross-platform apps and explore Android Automotive OS, Android Auto, or CarPlay where supported. Each project can draw on a different combination of the capabilities below:

  • Access to vehicle status and trip data
  • Notifications for diagnostic faults, geofence crossings, unauthorised movement, and tampering
  • Driving-event analysis and AI-assisted scoring based on speed, braking, phone use, and cornering
  • In-vehicle presentation of supported telematics information, subject to platform approval requirements.

Your hardware’s interfaces determine how data can reach the rest of the product. We review protocol documentation and sample output to establish what can be connected directly and where additional processing is needed. Depending on that assessment, the work may cover:

  • Integration with TCUs, GPS trackers, embedded OEM systems, and proprietary protocols
  • OBD-II, CAN data, and BLE integration where the required signals are available
  • Normalisation of location, diagnostic, and sensor data from different sources
  • Event rules for geofencing, unauthorised movement, and tampering
  • Processing of battery readings, fault codes, and maintenance flags for predictive maintenance
  • APIs that feed telematics data into your existing business platforms.

Our telematics software development process

Telematics software often ships alongside a hardware launch, so a missed deadline can delay a physical product release. We work in milestone-based phases with a dated deliverable at the end of each one, and every build still goes through testing before it reaches an end user.

This stage establishes what the first working version needs to prove and whether the available hardware data can support it. We capture the findings in documented:

  • Requirements and technical scope
  • Data source and hardware integration assessment
  • Delivery roadmap with dated milestones
  • Solution architecture and API specification
  • Technology stack recommendation
  • Security and compliance requirements

We work through the user journeys and screen structure before development starts. The outputs can range from early prototypes to reusable interface assets:

  • Wireframes and interactive prototypes
  • Dashboard and mobile UI screens
  • White-label design system, where relevant

Our engineers can build the agreed product components, covering both frontend and backend parts. Depending on the project, these may span:

  • Web dashboard, iOS/Android apps, in-vehicle apps
  • Backend services and APIs
  • Admin tools

We also check the software against actual hardware and data feeds to catch issues that test data alone may not reveal. Verification covers the relevant integration points and quality requirements:

  • Hardware and third-party API integration checks
  • Functional, security, and performance testing
  • Device-fragmentation and AAOS certification testing, where relevant

Whether the production environment runs on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, the setup reflects telemetry volume, reporting frequency, and any requirements for video or remote updates. Depending on the product, this stage may involve:

  • Production deployment of backend services and app store releases
  • Telemetry ingestion and storage for the expected number of connected devices
  • Processing pipelines that account for missing GPS signals, interrupted transmissions, and stale readings
  • Storage for video telematics and AI-generated safety events

Once the system is live, support focuses on issues that emerge under real operating conditions. The agreed scope of ongoing work can cover:

  • Monitoring and alerting
  • Software maintenance and updates
  • Support for further releases

Why clients choose us

approved by OEMs

An OEM-calibre team

Our connected vehicle work for Jaguar Land Rover, Škoda, and Mitsubishi Electric gives prospective clients examples of the standards our teams have worked to, while our 4.9/5 Clutch rating offers another view of their experience with us.

security

Security and compliance

Our process discipline draws on ISO 26262 and ASPICE awareness from enterprise-grade projects, and data handling follows privacy compliance throughout. Besides, we are certified in ISO 27001 for information security practices.

infotainment

Deep IVI experience

Getting telematics data onto a vehicle’s own display brings design and engineering constraints that a phone-only team may not have encountered. Because our engineers have also worked on infotainment interfaces, we know how to adapt apps for them with no issues.

Frequently asked questions

Can your software work with our existing hardware or data format?

In most cases, yes. Send us the protocol documentation or a sample of the device output, and we can assess what can be integrated directly and where a translation layer is needed.

How do you make sure the project stays on schedule?

We define acceptance criteria for each milestone and check hardware and third-party dependencies as the work progresses. That makes a blocked integration visible while there is still time to adjust the plan.

What quality assurance do you run before launch?

We can run functional, security, performance, and device compatibility tests before launch. We can also support your team through user acceptance testing before go-live.

How do you handle unstable GPS signals or incomplete data from our hardware?

GPS signals can drop and devices can go quiet in the field, so the platform needs to account for gaps in its data. We use fallback logic, data smoothing, and clear uncertainty flags to keep the dashboard usable without presenting an old location update as current.

How long does telematics software development take?

Custom telematics software development typically takes between 3 and 12+ months, depending on hardware integrations, data processing demands, and regulatory requirements.

Project tier Scope Estimated timeline
Basic MVP / White-label solution integration Standard GPS tracking, basic geofencing, standard OBD-II readouts, and a light web dashboard. 2–4 months
Custom telematics platform Real-time vehicle diagnostics, custom CAN bus data processing, driver behavior scoring, route optimisation, and native mobile apps. 5–8 months
Enterprise / OEM-grade Video telematics (AI dashcams), predictive maintenance engines, ADAS integration, high-frequency IoT streaming, and strict automotive cybersecurity (ISO/SAE 21434). 9–14+ months

What does it typically cost?

Custom telematics software typically costs between $30,000 and $250,000+, depending on system complexity, telemetry throughput, and specialised hardware integrations.

Solution Cost range
Basic MVP $25,000 – $50,000
Mid-tier platform $50,000 – $150,000
Enterprise / OEM system $150,000 – $500,000+

How do you secure telematics data in transit and at rest?

We use TLS to protect data in transit and role-based access controls to limit who can see it. During technical planning, we also define how stored data will be encrypted and managed for your platform.

Who owns the code and system after delivery?

You own the codebase, infrastructure, and documentation after delivery. We agree on those ownership terms before the project starts, so they are clear from the outset.

Can you work alongside our in-house engineering team?

Yes. We can take responsibility for a defined part of the platform, such as the driver app or hardware integration, while your engineers continue work on the other components. We agree on interfaces and responsibilities.
